About Me

Profesor Daniel Batista

Daniel Batista is a Cuban-born professional bassist, double bass player, composer, and music educator, currently based in Texas, USA. He is widely recognized for his work in Afro-Cuban jazz, Latin jazz, and modern jazz, bringing an authentic rhythmic and cultural foundation to both his performances and original compositions.

Fluent on electric bass and double bass, Daniel’s playing is deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban tradition while embracing contemporary jazz harmony, groove, and improvisation. His musical voice reflects a strong sense of time, interaction, and stylistic depth, shaped by years of performance within the Afro-Cuban and jazz traditions.

Daniel is the winner of the Third Prize at the JoJazz International Jazz Competition in Cuba, one of the country’s most prestigious platforms for emerging jazz artists. He has performed at major international festivals, including the Havana International Jazz Plaza Festival and the Denton Jazz Festival in Texas, establishing his presence on both Cuban and U.S. jazz stages.

Throughout his career, Daniel has performed and collaborated with internationally renowned jazz musicians, such as drummer Francisco Mela, flautist Orlando “Maraca” Valle, and saxophonist Carlos Averhoff Jr. These collaborations have played a significant role in shaping his artistic identity and professional growth.

As a composer, Daniel writes original music in Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz, combining folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms with modern jazz harmony and contemporary forms of expression. His compositions reflect a strong sense of cultural identity while remaining open to innovation and personal voice.
Daniel has also studied with and received mentorship from legendary American jazz bassist Lynn Seaton, further refining his technical command, musical maturity, and understanding of the jazz tradition.

In addition to his performance and compositional work, Daniel is a dedicated music educator, teaching electric bass and double bass through in-person and online instruction. His teaching approach focuses on Afro-Cuban rhythm, jazz harmony, groove development, improvisation, and stylistic authenticity, helping students develop both technical skills and a deep musical understanding.

Through performance, composition, and education, Daniel Batista continues to build an international career as a distinctive voice in Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz, committed to artistic excellence and the transmission of Afro-Cuban musical heritage to new generations.
